letterpress and pen

a photoshoot for pen international magazine, japan

TTWKennington — Own work Part of a mural for The Guardian newspaper at the lobby of the old Guardian building on Farringdon Road.
i don’t usually publish commercial work here, but i was very pleased with the results of this shoot, so i thought i would let you take a look. by PEN magazine, as part of a special ‘british edition’ last summer, i was commissioned to photograph a number of practitioners from fashion, art, and design working in london today. PEN magazine is a design, arts, and lifestyle journal based in tokyo, japan. it has a slick online presence here these photographs were made in a visit to the studio and workshop of alan kitching, one of the artists featured in the magazine’s britain edition. kitching has had a lengthy and staggeringly productive career in a practice based around letterpress printing and typographic design. now in his late seventies, the range of his work and sheer volume of his output is prodigious, and shows no signs of stopping. in addition to his own work and commissions, alan kitching runs letterpress typographic and printing workshops throughout the year, at his studio in kennington, london.
