chris bracey — i’ve looked up to heaven and been down to hell » scream

scream is proud to present lon­don-based light artist chris bracey’s first uk solo exhi­bi­tion. chris bracey has worked with neon and lights for over thir­ty years and the title of this exhi­bi­tion alludes to his remark­able jour­ney and career. bracey has acquired a vast fan base includ­ing com­mis­sions from high-pro­file clients such as david lachapelle, stel­la mccart­ney, mar­tin creed and vivi­enne west­wood. bracey has also pro­vid­ed dra­mat­ic instal­la­tions for films such as kubrick’s eyes wide shut, burton’scharlie and the choco­late fac­to­ry and the bat­man films. many of bracey’s works are self-pro­duced neons, ref­er­enc­ing pop­u­lar cul­ture – “shine a light in the dark­ness of your soul” was writ­ten by mar­tin gore from depeche mode and “there is a light that nev­er goes out” is from a song by the smiths. the exhi­bi­tion also includes icon­ic imagery from tat­too cul­ture such as “love & hate”, las vegas and the streets of soho. bracey also sal­vages old lights from fair­grounds, film props and vin­tage signs to re-work and re-gen­er­ate them into con­tem­po­rary pop sculp­tures that lumi­nate and con­jure a sense of won­der, nos­tal­gia and glamour.

the photographers gallery new public opening

the pho­tog­ra­phers’ gallery will unveil its new home for inter­na­tion­al and british pho­tog­ra­phy in the heart of lon­don’s soho on sat­ur­day 19 may 2012. the gallery’s open­ing will mark the con­clu­sion of its ambi­tious £9.2 mil­lion cap­i­tal cam­paign, which has been gen­er­ous­ly sup­port­ed by arts coun­cil england’s lot­tery fund along­side a range of trusts, foun­da­tions, cor­po­rates and individuals.

 

designed by award-win­ning irish archi­tects o’donnell + tuomey, the trans­formed build­ing fea­tures a two storey exten­sion that dou­bles the size of the pre­vi­ous exhi­bi­tion space. pro­vid­ing a plat­form for an enhanced pro­gramme of exhi­bi­tions, the gen­er­ous­ly pro­por­tioned gal­leries will show­case estab­lished and emerg­ing pho­to­graph­ic tal­ent from the uk and around the world. a new envi­ron­men­tal­ly-con­trolled floor will cre­ate oppor­tu­ni­ties to show more work from archives and muse­um col­lec­tions and high­er ceil­ings in the top floor gal­leries will pro­vide dynam­ic spaces for large-scale and mov­ing image works.
