scream is proud to present london-based light artist chris bracey’s first uk solo exhibition. chris bracey has worked with neon and lights for over thirty years and the title of this exhibition alludes to his remarkable journey and career. bracey has acquired a vast fan base including commissions from high-profile clients such as david lachapelle, stella mccartney, martin creed and vivienne westwood. bracey has also provided dramatic installations for films such as kubrick’s eyes wide shut, burton’scharlie and the chocolate factory and the batman films. many of bracey’s works are self-produced neons, referencing popular culture – “shine a light in the darkness of your soul” was written by martin gore from depeche mode and “there is a light that never goes out” is from a song by the smiths. the exhibition also includes iconic imagery from tattoo culture such as “love & hate”, las vegas and the streets of soho. bracey also salvages old lights from fairgrounds, film props and vintage signs to re-work and re-generate them into contemporary pop sculptures that luminate and conjure a sense of wonder, nostalgia and glamour.
the photographers’ gallery will unveil its new home for international and british photography in the heart of london’s soho on saturday 19 may 2012. the gallery’s opening will mark the conclusion of its ambitious £9.2 million capital campaign, which has been generously supported by arts council england’s lottery fund alongside a range of trusts, foundations, corporates and individuals.
designed by award-winning irish architects o’donnell + tuomey, the transformed building features a two storey extension that doubles the size of the previous exhibition space. providing a platform for an enhanced programme of exhibitions, the generously proportioned galleries will showcase established and emerging photographic talent from the uk and around the world. a new environmentally-controlled floor will create opportunities to show more work from archives and museum collections and higher ceilings in the top floor galleries will provide dynamic spaces for large-scale and moving image works.
the london based online photo mag has just published its 7th issue. it’s an interesting and unusual website. it’s run like a print periodical rather than a website in that it comes out fully formed like a real print mag. on a newstand. run by ian teh and others, deep sleep aims to showcase the best of contemporary london photography from the personal portfolios of contributors. anyone can submit work for publication, but it must be based around a pre-announced theme.
