walking with sigmund and anna

this started as an idea for a small entry combining photographs i took in soprabolzano last year; the small town on a plateau overlooking the city of bolzano in the italian tyrol with some from the freud museum, london. i took a christmas walk in the dolomites on the ‘freud promenade’ near soprabolzano which is a relatively short hike through woodland, with views of the eastern dolomites, popular during visits made by sigmund freud and his daughter anna in the 1920s. the walk is easy, pleasant, and when the weather is fine can boast breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
my pictures from the walk are interspersed with images made in the freud museum in london, housed in freud’s final residence after fleeing austria. he died here after a protracted and painful period of cancer in 1939. although i’ve been living here for something approaching thirty years now, a visit was something i’d always promised myself but had never gotten around to. if you have any interest at all in freud, his life and work, with that of his daughter, anna, a visit to this modest museum will give an insight into the freuds’ life and work, both generally and in this quiet leafy corner of north london,

it now strikes me it could be a good starting point for a much bigger project, around freud’s life and times but for now these images might piqué your curiosity.
