the parc national des calanques lies along the mediterranean coast to the east of marseille, and stretches 20 km to the small fishing port and tourist town of cassis. the term calanque refers to the canyon like rocky inlets of white limestone, featuring precipitous cliffs and quiet coves formed by ancient rivers and cave collapse.
