awaji island or awajishima is japan’s fifth largest island. traditionally a farming and fishing area, the greying population and increasing centralisation has meant that the younger generation are depopulating the island and travelling to the mainland industrial and commercial centres on the main island of honshu. the resulting depopulation means the traditional way of life is declining. to combat this, the island is taking advantage of its natural scenic beauty and proximity to the inland sea with the proliferation of resorts along its beautiful coastline.
the toto corporation opened its resort here in 2015. on my recent trip to the inland sea i seem to have binged out on tadao ando designs
